Superbowl XLIV is almost here and with it will come the usual menagerie of Superbowl Ads. The New Orleans Saints will take on the Indianapolis Colts and people around the country will gather to watch not only them, but the shameless and overpriced product schilling to sell us the latest antibacterial, eco-friendly, E.D. preventing, artificially-sweetened soda to make us more attractive to the opposite sex and give us ripped abs.

Interestingly enough we also just had President Obama’s first State of the Union Address this week. And as I sit back and look at the flocks of congressmen sitting in those seats applauding (or not applauding), sitting, standing, snickering, smiling, posing, posturing, and placing themselves in the view of what seemes to be 3,000 cameras with all sorts of angles and directorial cuts, I couldn’t help but think, “OMG, our government is a big TV commercial!” Lights, camera and action! It’s interesting to note that these days it’s hard to tell the difference between the pedantic and condescending attempts of our elected Washington politicians’ rhetoric and the junk we’ve come to expect from big advertising firms on Superbowl Sunday. Yup, I said it…politicians aren’t leaders, they’re ad men, or worse…products!

Everyone’s all about selling something or themselves. They also both obsess over what people think. As if massive public opinion ever really gave the world anything worthwhile. I don’t want the President, the House of Representatives, or the Senate passing anything based on CNN polls. I don’t even want people quoting polls anymore. VenetianPrincess, Nigahiga, and Shane Dawson are the most popular YouTube celebrities, but that doesn’t mean they should be enacting legislation. They are popular and that is cool, but that’s it.

Also, when did “The American people” become some monolithic conglomerate that gives politicians the right to say pretty much anything in the name of? “The American people” are tired of partisan politics, “The American people” want change in foreign policy. “The American people” like 2% milk with their Count Chocula. Allow me to enlighten you as to the likes of “the American people.” They’re too busy watching American Idol and wondering if Jeniffer Aniston will ever get married again to even watch you guys. I guess what I’m saying, is I don’t care if you clap, don’t clap, stand up, say “God Bless America” or or wear a lapel pin. Just make smart decisions and stop pandering.

I’m not sure whether having our elected officials and our advertising industry be so similar is a good thing or not. I’m not certain that it’s healthy that 24 hour networks are dedicated to covering the minutia of either. And finally, I’m not completely convinced that either group is playing with a full deck of cards. Oh well, I guess we should sit back and enjoy our high fructose corn syrupy politicians and not ask why.

Special thanks to my good friends David Lauber and Michael Piper for helping me put together this week’s video. Enjoy!

That is the kind of ego boost I need. Now stop it before I let it go to my head. But no, you and like 3 other people read this, so I don’t qualify as professional.
